This project aims to extend our understanding of the strategies English Medium Instruction (EMI) lecturers employ to teach central concepts in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) lectures. As concepts are expressed by terminology, the project will focus on the strategies that lecturers employ to introduce and explain such subject-specific terms. The project will investigate four different EMI contexts: Asia (The People’s Republic of China/PRC), Africa (The Republic of South Africa/RSA), the Middle East (The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia/KSA) and Europe (UK). The aim is to identify these strategies by analysing the language and interactional patterns lecturers use when explaining STEM-related terminology. The identified strategies will be systematically developed into a framework. At the theoretical level the framework will contribute to our knowledge of constructive meaning making in EMI STEM lectures. At the practical level, it can be adapted to raise EMI lecturers’ strategy awareness so they can facilitate students’ comprehension and academic achievement in EMI contexts.
