Özet

In the architectural literature, we encounter three identity terms: "place identity", "urban identity", and "architectural identity". The meanings of these terms are very close and permeable, but the boundaries of these terms cannot be drawn. One of these terms is "place identity," which the study discusses as an umbrella term covering other terms. Place identity enables people to make sense of the physical environment in which they live and to establish continuity between the past and the future. Architectural buildings, an important component of place identity, form place facts through their unique identity. Contemporary art museums such as houses, schools, and hospitals are the architectural elements that make up the identity of the place. Contemporary art museums, which are the symbolic buildings of the cities, differentiate place fact, which today is increasingly uniform, through original and unique architectural identity. In this context, contemporary art museums are becoming buildings that represent the identity of their places. The study aims to draw attention to the importance of place fact and demonstrate its contribution to place identity through the architectural identity of contemporary art museums as individual structures in the example of Eskişehir Odunpazarı Modern Museum designed by Kengo Kuma and opened for use in 2019. Within the aim of the study, the architectural identity of the building was examined through its relation to the traditional settlement. In the study, following the literature research, the identity components put forward by various researchers were collected to evaluate the architectural identity of the Eskişehir Odunpazarı Modern Museum. These architectural identity components were classified on the terms of "place identity," "urban identity," and "architectural identity". When the three architectural identity terms are examined, it is seen that these terms are shaped by the continuity relationship established between the past and the future, the contextual relationship based on the place fact and the meaning relationship that people attribute to that place. For this reason, the evaluation criteria are discussed under three headings: continuity, contextual and meaning relationship. Continuity relationship was examined in the spatial organization, size and scale, colour- texture and material, form and facade design criteria. The contextual relationship was discussed in the visual connection between indoor and outdoor space and relationship with public spaces. The meaning relationship was examined as a situation that node points in the settlement and is symbolic. In determining the criteria, the qualification of the contemporary museum approach that affects museum architecture is also considered.

The architectural identity of Eskişehir Odunpazarı Modern Museum was examined based on the determined criteria and obtained through the findings had been discussed. As a result, the museum establishes continuity, contextual, and meaning relationships with the Odunpazarı settlement through its architectural identity.
