Turkish Modernization (1800–1928): Digitization and Open Access Studies Research Group
Turkish Modernization (1800–1928): Digitization and Open Access Studies Research Group is an interdisciplinary research group that brings together scholars from a wide range of fields, primarily the Social Sciences and Humanities, as well as the Natural, Medical, Engineering, and Information Sciences. Its main objective is to process and analyze printed and manuscript works written in Ottoman Turkish that belong to the modernization period extending from the late Ottoman era to the Republican period, using traditional methods and digital technologies such as artificial intelligence–assisted Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), and to make these materials available through international access in line with the principles of Open Science.
Its primary strategic aim is to bring together the existing research potential within the university around this common framework, to generate synergy, and to function as an incubator for specialized sub-research groups that are expected to become independent in the future. Its ultimate goal is to evolve into a Digital Social and Humanities Research Center. In addition to developing collaborations with public and private institutions, archives, libraries, and technology companies, the group aims to conduct projects within the framework of international collaborations.
