This course is an introductory course, which aims to introduce students to the main issues, concepts and methods of analysis in political science. By the end of the course you will be expected not only to have working understanding of the main concepts, topics and approaches in political science, but also gain ability to question the world, and make intelligent inquiries into the controversies surrounding them using the analytical tools provided throughout the course. It does not aim to provide clear-cut solutions to such controversies, instead the students are to use the tools and frameworks provided and look at such issues from multiple angles.
The main textbook for the course is Andrew Heywood, Politics, 3rd ed., Palgrave, 2007.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
The course will consist of lectures intertwined with discussions. The lectures and discussions are to be conducted in English. You are most welcomed to come to my office hours to discuss your questions.
Students are expected to come to each class having done the assigned readings. Close and critical reading is utterly necessary.
Attendance at every class is required, and you will count as having attended only if you stay throughout the entire class. Chronic absences will seriously affect your grade.
Throughout the course, you are expected to adhere to the principles of academic honesty. Cheating and plagiarism are serious offences, and will result in disciplinary action.
Aside from your textbook, you are encouraged to take a look at newspapers and follow international news channels.
Assessment and Grading:
· Class participation: 10 %
· Movie report and book report: 10%
· Midterm Exam: 30 %
· Final Exam: 50%
Class participation: Having perfect attendance does not mean you get full credit for class participation.
Your evaluation will depend on the following criteria:
1. Participation in the class discussions
2. Participation in the class exercises
During class discussions it is very likely that there will be disagreements; disagreements are expected and welcomed if you follow the general rules of courtesy. Please do remember that you are expected to show respect to everyone when they are presenting and defending their opinions, making comments or asking questions –at least in this class.
Movie report: You will be writing a commentary about a selected movie. You will be provided with guidelines for these reports.
Book report: You will be given a list of selected books, and you will be writing a commentary about one of those books. The guidelines will be provided.
Exams: There will be one midterm and one final examination. The exams will be based on assigned readings, lectures, and in-class material (such as discussions). The exams will have diverse range of questions, including short answer and essay questions. There will be review sessions before the exams. The final examination will not be cumulative, and focus only on the material covered after the midterm exam.
