Epithelial Tissue.
Cells and extracellular matrix (ECM), which surrounds the cells and is composed of fibers and ground substance, constitute a tissue. The combination of particular cells surrounded by various types and proportions of ECM components determines the unique tissue morphology, which in turn dictates the function of that tissue. Four general tissue types comprise the human body: epithelial, connective, nervous, and muscle tissues. In this chapter, the histologic and functional characteristics of epithelial tissues and their derivatives, glands, will be explored.
Glands.
Most glands are formed during embryonic development
by the downgrowth of the epithelial covering into the
underlying connective tissue. There are two major classification of glands, exocrine and endocrine
