Özet:
Physical activity is critical to human health through its physiological and psychological effects. This study explored the association of various lifestyle factors including physical activity with the academic performance of first-year medical students at Bahçeşehir University (BAU) Faculty of Medicine in Istanbul. Conducted between May 1 and August 31, 2023, using a cross-sectional design, the research analyzed data from tools such as the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, Body mass index (BMI) calculations, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Fagerstrom Nicotine Dependence Test, Perceived Stress Scale, and a socio-demographic questionnaire. The findings revealed that gender, physical activity, sleep quality, smoking habits, and socio-demographic factors were not significantly associated with academic performance. The only notable association was observed with BMI indicating a statistically significant decrease in passing grades as BMI increased. Stress levels, as determined by a questionnaire, were not found to be related to exam success. Our study suggests that integrating discussions about lifestyle factors, particularly focusing on BMI, into the curriculum could positively impact student success. However, it emphasizes the need for further in-depth research, including long-term follow-up, to understand the intricate interplay of multiple factors influencing academic performance.
