Özet:
This research aimed to assess the accumulation levels
of heavy metals, specifically aluminum (Al), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), and cadmium
(Cd), in the macroalgae Ulva sp. and Gracilaria sp. and to evaluate their
usability as bioindicators of heavy metal pollution in the aquatic ecosystems
of Izmit Bay, Türkiye. This research was carried out by taking macroalgae and
seawater samples from two different locations (Tavşancıl Industrial Zone and
Naile Café Residential Area) in two different seasons (summer (July 2024) and
winter season (November 2024)). While the physical-chemical parameters such as
temperature, pH and dissolved oxygen were measured in the field, heavy metal
content was analyzed by ICP-OES method by ISO 11885:2007 standard in a TÜRKAK
accredited laboratory. The obtained data showed that the highest heavy metal
accumulation was in Gracilaria sp. species, Al concentration was 210.74 mg/L
and Fe concentration was 176.51 mg/L. In the study, heavy metal levels in
seawater were found below the threshold value (<0.05 mg/L), which showed
that the accumulation occurred mainly through bioconcentration in macroalgae.
The absence of Cd in all samples indicates that the pollution level of this
element is low. This study determined that Ulva sp. and Gracilaria sp. can be
used as reliable ecological bioindicators to monitor heavy metal pollution.
