Abstract:

SHORT FIBER REINFORCING and MICROSTRUCTURE EFFECTS on TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES of POLYETHERETHERKETONE (PEEK) and ITS COMPOSITES Taner YILMAZ Keywords : Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polymer composite, tribology, microstructural effects. Abstract : Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is a polymer called as an advanced material. Aromatic backbone gives high temperature and environmental resistance. With a complex molecular structure and superb mechanical performance, PEEK becomes very strategic material because of their lower friction coefficient and wear resistance, PEEK is used as bearing materials especially in aerospace industry. In this study we intend to show two important parameter effect of the wear characterization of the materials. First; the reinforcement type effects, second; microstructure effects on wear behavior of PEEK and its composites. Materials are kindly supplied from victrex. Injection molded, unreinforced and three different random oriented short fiber reinforced PEEK and it's composites are investigated. In the second stage of study, with using thermal treatments we get different molecular structures of virgin PEEK and PEEK composites. An increase in % crystallization and transcrystalline layer formation and their effects on the wear behavior of PEEK and its composites are investigated. in
