Abstract:

In this study, initial objective is to characterize solid particle erosive wear behavior of Ti6Al4V alloys in detail. With this purpose, Ti6Al4V samples were eroded in specially designed sandblasting system at various parameters and variation of wear amount was investigated. Morphology of eroded surfaces was examined by using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and possible wear mechanisms were discussed. In the first stage of experimental studies, Ti6Al4V material was eroded in various wear times (2, 5, 10, 15 and 20 s), under various pressures (1,5, 3 and 4 bar) with various particle impingement angles (15°, 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°) by using different size erodent particles (60, 80 and 120 mesh). Maximum wear amount was obtained when the material was eroded 20 seconds in 30° impingement angle and 4 bar pressure by using 120 mesh size erodent particles .Another aim of the thesis is to investigate effectiveness of erodent particle mixtures (which consist various size of erodent particle in various rates) on solid particle erosion and filling the gap in literature on this subject. As a result of experimental studies, it is determined that wear rates of erodent particle mixtures are less than singular sized erodent particles. Wear rates of various particle mixtures, the interactions of particles with each other and the effects of these interactions on solid particle erosion are discussed.
