Abstract

Our country also has a very rich natural flora due to its climate and ecological conditions. In this plant flora, medicinal and aromatic plants collected from nature and cultivated are included. The high economic added value of these plants is also an indication that they have a strong economic potential. There are approximately 9 thousand natural and 3 thousand endemic plant species in our country. Balm (Melissa officinalis L.,), which belongs to the Lamiaceae family, is a perennial plant and can be grown in all Mediterranean countries. It can be grown naturally in our country and its agricultural production has increased in recent years. In general, the rate of essential oil is low. It is preferred in the cosmetics and perfume industry because of its nice smell. It is among the medicinal and aromatic plants that are sold at high prices. Since the production in our country is insufficient, approximately 33.3 tons of oil is imported annually. The elderflower plant is among the oldest medicinal plants. Its leaves contain cinnamic and benzoic acid derivatives, essential oils, flavonoids, phenyletanoid glycosides, triterpenes. In lemon balm cultivation, the correct determination of the plant's water demand, the selection of the right irrigation method and the appropriate irrigation time planning are of great importance, especially in terms of quality parameters. Research and scientific findings on this subject are not at the desired level. In this paper, the existing literature on the importance of irrigation in lemon balm cultivation, when and how to do it will be examined, and suggestions for appropriate irrigation time planning will be explained based on the reference plant water consumption approach.

Keywords: Drip irrigation, evapotranspiration, irrigation method, medicinal and aromatic plant.
