Dr. Senem Müştak Sevindik is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at Kocaeli University, where she also serves as Vice Head of the Department of Architecture. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Gazi University in 2013, followed by a Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Natural Sciences at Kocaeli University in 2017. Her doctoral studies, completed at the same institution between 2017 and 2023, culminated in a PhD dissertation entitled “Architectural Evaluation of Post-Republican Industrial Buildings: The Case of Kocaeli,” which she defended in April 2023.
She began her academic career as a research assistant in 2014 and has since been actively involved in both teaching and research. At the undergraduate level, Dr. Müştak Sevindik teaches Architectural Design Studio, Graduation Project, Architectural Representation and Presentation Techniques I–II, Basic Design, Architecture and Industrialization, and Architectural Photography. At the graduate level, she teaches Contemporary Debates in Architecture and Inclusive Design in Architecture.
Her research focuses on industrial architecture, architectural identity, spatial memory, adaptive reuse, and processes of modernization in architecture. Situated at the intersection of architectural history, theory, and design practice, her work explores the evolving relationships between the built environment, collective memory, and socio-cultural transformation. Her research has been presented at national and international conferences and published in a range of academic outlets.
In addition to her academic work, Dr. Müştak Sevindik has participated in national and international architectural design competitions. In 2023, she received third prize in an international conceptual architectural competition addressing the adaptive reuse of a historic building in Podgorica, Montenegro. She has also been awarded prizes in architectural competitions organized by public institutions in Türkiye and has served as a consultant to several competition teams.
Her scholarly activities include publications in internationally indexed journals, conference proceedings, book chapters, and peer-review work. She is also interested in architectural education, critical architectural theory, urban sociology, and representational practices in architecture, and she adopts an approach that seeks to bridge architectural practice and theoretical research.
