EVALUATION OF POSTGRADUATE TOURISM EDUCATION FROM STUDENT PERSPECTIVE

Abstract

Tourism education is provided at secondary, associate, undergraduate, and graduate levels in our country. The first three levels of education aim to train the qualified personnel needed in the tourism sector, while the graduate level aims to train senior managers and academicians for the sector. It is important to examine the postgraduate education period, which has a significant impact on the training of managers who can have a say in the management of the tourism industry and tourism educators who shape tourism education. Despite this importance, the fact that no thesis was found in the national thesis center in the related literature review and that the research on postgraduate tourism education is extremely limited has been the starting point of the research. This study, which aims to evaluate postgraduate tourism education, approaches postgraduate tourism education in Turkey from the perspective of students. The study was applied to 206 students who received postgraduate education in the 2020-2021 academic year in the institutes of universities providing tourism education in Turkey. The data obtained within the scope of the study were subjected to statistical analysis through the SPSS 22.0 statistical program. Corelation and regression analysis was used to analyze the relationships between the dimensions determining the students' views on tourism education. As a result of the findings, it was found that there were positive and significant relationships between the dimensions of the scale in which students evaluated postgraduate tourism education, and significant differences were found in the level of evaluation of postgraduate tourism education according to the descriptive characteristics of the students. Among the scale dimensions, graduate education, management and administrative staff, distance education, advisor, and academic staff dimensions positively affect the overall satisfaction with graduate education, while the physical conditions dimension does not affect overall satisfaction. It is thought that physical conditions have not affected the overall satisfaction level because the period of the research coincided with the pandemic period and the students did most of their graduate education online.
