Drinking
water is continuously contaminated by industrial dyes waste. Therefore, this
issue continues to attract public attention due to the health and environmental
concerns associated with toxic dyes. In this work, novel adsorbents (Zr-TP-H
and Zr-TP-C-H) consisting of zirconium butoxide/terephthalate/hydrolyzed with and
without cellulose in 1:2:0:4 and 1:2:1:4 mol ratio were synthesized in ethanol
using sol-gel method. The prepared new organic-inorganic hybrid compounds as
adsorbents were characterized by a combination of FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDS, and BET analysis
methods. Then, their removal behaviors for methylene blue (MB) dye were
systematically investigated. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the
adsorption process between these new adsorbents and MB dye conformed to
pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, demonstrating a
hybrid chemical adsorption process. As expected, the maximum adsorption capacity
of the hybrid material Zr-TP-C-H was higher than Zr-TP-H.
