People with physical illness are at an increased risk of depression, which is linked with a worse prognosis and reduced adherence to treatement. Medically ill patients with depression have reductions in quality of life , increased medical morbidity and mortality, increased functional disability, reduced occupational performance, and reductions in role functioning. Other implications of depression of depressive comorbidity include prolonged hospital admission, amplification of physical symptoms, reduction in adherence to medical treatment and increased medical costs and health care use.
