Bu araştırmanın amacı İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı bölümünde okuyan öğrencilerin İngilizce okuma ile ilgili metaforik algılarını ortaya koymaktır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2022-2023 Akademik yılında Akdeniz ve Kocaeli Üniversitelerinin İngiliz Dili ve Edebiyatı bölümlerinde öğrenim görmekte olan 137 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Öğrencilerin İngilizce okuma yapmak ile ilgili metaforik algılarını ortaya çıkarmak üzere öğrencilerden “İngilizce okuma yapmak … gibidir … çünkü ….” şeklindeki cümleyi tamamlamaları istenmiş ve elde edilen veriler içerik analizi yöntemi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular İngiliz Dili Edebiyatı bölümü öğrencilerinin İngilizce okuma yapmak ile ilgili algılarının genel olarak olumlu olduğunu göstermektedir. Okuma becerisinin ve İngilizce dilinde okuma yapmanın İngiliz Dili Edebiyatı bölümündeki önemi düşünüldüğünde, bu bölümde okuyan öğrencilerin İngilizce okuma yapma konusundaki algılarının ortaya koyulmasının, bu öğrenciler için hazırlanacak Hazırlık programlarında okuma becerisinin geliştirilmesine yönelik çalışmalara ışık tutacak önemli katkılarda bulunacağı düşünülmektedir.
This research aims to reveal the metaphorical perceptions of the students studying at the Department of English Language and Literature (ELL) about reading in English. The research study group consists of 137 students studying at the Departments of English Language and Literature of Akdeniz and Kocaeli Universities in the academic year. To reveal the metaphorical perceptions of the students about reading in English, the students were asked, “Reading in English is like … because ….” They were asked to complete the sentence in the form of and the data obtained were analyzed using the content analysis method. The results of the study revealed that students’ perceptions on reading in English are generally positive. Considering the importance of reading in English in the English Language and Literature department, it is thought that revealing the perceptions of ELL students studying in this department about reading in English will make significant contributions to the studies on the development of reading skills in the Preparatory programs to be prepared for these students.
