Özet

This study was conducted to examine the therapeutic relationship established between the therapist and the client in active music therapy based on therapists' perspectives. Music therapy is a discipline in which music is systematically and evidence-based used to address individuals' physical, mental, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. The study comprehensively analyzes the determining factors in therapists' preferences for active music therapy methods and their implementation processes. The research problem focuses on how therapists select intervention methods according to the needs of clients, establish therapeutic relationships, and address challenges encountered during the process. Employing a qualitative research approach, this study gathered data from four therapists selected through criterion sampling. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form and were presented to reflect the participants' detailed experiences. During the interviews, therapists evaluated their experiences regarding methodology, selection of musical instruments, session durations, and the dynamics of the therapeutic relationship within the active music therapy process. The findings indicate that therapists select intervention methods based on the client’s condition and therapeutic goals. Additionally, it was determined that a trust-and empathy-based therapeutic relationship enhances the success of the process. Among musical instruments, guitar, piano, and percussion were found to be frequently preferred tools. The findings emphasize the necessity of individualizing the therapeutic process and employing methods tailored to the client’s specific needs. This study provides valuable insights into optimizing the implementation of music therapy practices based on therapists’ experiences. The results highlight the importance of adopting a multidisciplinary approach in addressing music therapy within health and education fields. Furthermore, this study offers guidance for therapists in overcoming challenges encountered during the therapeutic process, thereby contributing to the effectiveness of music therapy interventions.
