The aim of this study is to model the fuel consumption for gear shifting without depending on any vehicle and engine specifications and to determine the effects of gear shifting strategies by using the model. Firstly, the moment and power characteristics of internal combustion engine are revealed to model fuel consumption for gear shifting. Using the engine characteristics and gear ratios, the subsystems obtaining vehicle speed, required tractive force and specific fuel consumption of engine were developed. The fuel consumption for gear shiftings were modeled with outputs of the subsystems. By using the developed model, the effects of two different gear shifting strategies based on geometrical and progressive gear steps were determined upon fuel consumption. For this, the gear ratio has been computed by using these methods and the fuel consumption curves were modeled according to the gear ratios. The differences between two gear strategies have been searched by tractive diagram. Therefore, the developed modeling method has provided the fuel consumption to be determined according to tractive diagram.
