Performance Evaluation of Adaptive Numerology for Mode 2 Autonomous V2X Communication

The Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication provides advanced autonomous driving applications through ultra-reliable and low-latency sidelink transmissions. A cornerstone of this technology, particularly in out-of-coverage scenarios (Mode2/PC5), is the autonomous resource selection mechanism. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of 5G numerology impact mechanism on Mode 2, focusing on the relationship between vehicle speed, Doppler spread, channel coherence time. Through a detailed MATLAB-based link-level simulation of a 3GPP-compliant highway scenario, we analyze the performance in terms of Packet Reception Ratio (PRR) by high mobility under fast fading. Our findings reveal a fundamental trade-off governed by the choice of Sub-Carrier Spacing (SCS): a 60 kHz SCS can enhance PRR by up to 50% compared to a 15 kHz SCS and ensures that keeping transmission time shorter than coherence time dynamically selects the SCS based on vehicle speed. Results provide critical insights into the optimal configuration of an adaptive numerology scheme that achieves more reliability while efficiently managing resources at low speeds through larger slot duration of 5G-NR V2X Mode 2 without compromising the PRR threshold.
