In this study, the effects of substructure and features of the support conditions on the earthquake performance of historical structures are taken into consideration in the numerical model and the results are compared with those of the case where the local soil condition and actual support types are ignored. For this purpose, the tomb structure of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Khan next to the Fatih mosque has been studied. Analytical model of the superstructure is formed by shell element for dome and solid elements for walls. Local soil layers are formed by three dimensional solid elements. In the first application, the superstructure is modeled as built, taking fixed end support condition and neglecting the local soil effects. Second case holds the superstructure with simple supports and ignoring the local soil effects. In the third application, the local ground conditions of the building are taken into consideration with the superstructure. It has been accepted that the building material and soil exhibit linear-elastic behavior as observed in the recent earthquakes in order to distinguish the pure effects. The structure was analyzed in time domain triggering by earthquake motions with different energy and frequency contents. Comparisons of large collection of analysis results are discussed. Internal member forces and stresses, fundamental periods of the structure and modal characteristics, base shear forces, structural drifts and mass participation factors in dynamic behavior are compared for all cases. It is seen that the resultant forces are not too distinct for the building with simple support and fixed end conditions, but with local ground conditions, important effects on the building is observed. Based on earthquake characteristics, these effects are increased with Van and Ege earthquakes but decreased by the Bolu earthquake. Including soil conditions in modelling is important in assessment of the earthquake performance for existing historical buildings. Results statistics for each case and the observed differences in between the cases will be important contribution to decision makers to propose consistent and constructive decisions in strengthening studies.
