Composite materials are preferred since their specific properties [1]. Machining of composite
with conventional process has many difficulties due to having different properties of contents [2].
Lasers have many advantages in machining of materials. When directed fiber reinforced
composites are laser-machined, it is impossible to obtain a circular cavity. Almost circularity can
be achieved for low laser energies while increasing the energy increases the circularity distortion.
This is because the fibers conduct heat much more than the polymer matrix [3,4].
In this study, pulse duration of 2,4,6,8 and 10 ms laser pulses with 4J energy were sent to the
composite material. The Heat Affected Zone around the cavity formed on the composite material
was measured. Measurements were made with optical microscope images of the cavity. As a
result of the measurements, it was observed that the heat conduction through the fibers was about
1.9 times higher than the perpendicular to the fibers.
