Abstract

Although the sustainability of marine ecosystems is often assessed in terms of human-focused economic outputs, the true essence lies in preserving the “sustainable life” cycle—one in which all living organisms that make up the ecosystem can continue to exist. This study examines the biogeochemical components in the surface sediments of Izmit Bay, which is under intense anthropogenic pressure, as indicators of ecosystem memory to understand the barriers to the continuity of life. Analyses of surface sediments collected from 56 stations across the bay reveal that the accumulation of biogenic silica (BSi), total organic matter (TOM), total organic carbon (TOC), and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) has exceeded the limits of natural cycles. According to the findings, the 61% increase in TOC levels between 1987 and the 2020s, the concentration of biogenic accumulation in the Eastern Basin, and the decline in biological diversity indicate that the ecosystem’s biological carrying capacity is being strained. Excessive inputs of carbon and calcareous matter—a byproduct of human-centered industrialization—not only degrade water quality but also alter the physicochemical structure of benthic habitats, threatening species diversity and the fundamental cycles of life. This chronological degradation, as revealed by sediment records, highlights the heavy ecological cost of “sustainable development” goals and underscores the urgent need to adopt a life-focused “sustainable living” strategy. In conclusion, the biogeochemical anomalies in Izmit Bay prove that the ecosystem’s self-repair capacity is under critical threat and that nutrient inputs and industrial pressures must be radically reduced through an ecosystem-centered approach to ensure the continuity of life. It is believed that the ongoing dredging operations in the Eastern Basin of the Izmit Bay will contribute to the ecosystem’s self-recovery process.
