Özet

The main aim of this article is to underline the positive elements of squatter settlements, which conserve traces of vernacular elements that need to be preserved, and to describe how such squatter settlements undergo a metamorphosis. Two squatter settlements of Istanbul, Kurucuseme and Maslak, have been chosen as the subjects of this study. These are old squatter settlements that have managed to remain unchanged for approximately the last 60 years. Since no distribution of land deeds has been done in the areas, the owners of the dwellings have made no changes to them. The other subject area chosen is Gultepe. Since after a certain time the owners of the first gecekondus built in this area received land deeds, the original dwellings were torn down and replaced by multistory apartment buildings. The first step consisted of comparing the buildings in the squatter settlements with those in villages of origin. The second step consisted of comparing the buildings in the villages of origin with the buildings of the past. Since this study has concentrated on an analysis of cultural values of a squatter settlement that has not undergone metamorphosis, the Gultepe settlement has been analyzed only as an example of how this metamorphosis occurs.
