The main purpose of this study is to investigate the rotor response affected by the shaft bow and unbalance fault as it passes through critical speeds. For a more realistic analysis, a finite element model is developed. The Newmark-beta method for solving the non-linear lateral vibration of rotor bearing systems is approached and the effects of various parameters including shaft bow, unbalance mass and support parameters are shown. The results illustrate the presence of faults in rotating machinery increases vibration in the system. However, exceeding the allowable vibration amplitude prevents the applied torque from increasing the speed and only increases the vibration amplitude, making it difficult to bring the rotor above the critical speed. In addition, it is shown that the support parameters play an essential role in modifying the dynamic characteristics of the rotor system, thus facilitating its successful passage through critical speeds.
