Micromanipulation of biological species is significant for biological separation, medical treatment, and biosensors. While many different actuating techniques have been studied in recent years, the most promising micromanipulation method is related to magnetic actuators. In this work, design and analysis of quadrupole magnetic actuators for two dimensional manipulation of biological particles are studied. Finite element method based numerical methods are used for analysis and magnetic force calculations.
Several different quadrupole electromagnetic actuating systems are designed and analyzed, and an optimal design is obtained.
