2025 16th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, ELECO 2025, İstanbul, Türkiye, 27 - 29 Kasım 2025, (Tam Metin Bildiri)
In this work, a two-stage cascaded low-noise amplifier (LNA) is presented, specifically designed for silicon photonic (SiP) Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) and suitable for broadband communication systems. The circuit is designed in a 130 nm SiGe HBT process and optimized for high gain and wideband performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed LNA achieves a 20-30 GHz bandwidth with a gain of 25.84 dB, while maintaining a noise figure between ~4.44-5 dB. Compared to existing broadband communication LNAs, the design provides a higher gain along with lower DC power consumption, highlighting its efficiency and scalability for high-speed applications. It operates with 2.5V supply voltage and consumes 12.38 mW of power. The entire design and verification process was carried out using the Cadence Virtuoso platform. As part of future work, the LNA will be integrated with SiP-based Mach-Zehnder modulators to enhance their performance. In particular, the use of this LNA is intended to improve the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of MZMs, enabling more reliable and power-efficient operation in next-generation optical communication systems.
