Automated cutting and splicing of rubberized textile cord ply with a consistent splice overlap width is critical process for tire industry. The splicing process makes the splice overlap by pressing the ply leading end against the ply trailing end at a defined angle. Highly accurate control of the splice overlap width means less material scrap leading to significant cost savings. Accurate measurement and control of the splice overlap width can help tire design engineers to optimize performance properties of a tire, enhance product design, manufacturing, and quality. This paper presents a novel approach to constitute real time measurement and control of the splice overlap width of rubberized textile cord ply based on a discrete scale-space framework with automatic scale selection.
