It is a fact that time delay estimation (TDE) requires specialized approaches for many real-time applications. Despite various approaches being proposed over the years for time delay estimation, the generalized cross-correlation method is generally preferred. This method is favored due to its requiring less adaptation time compared to adaptive filtering-based methods and providing good results. This paper proposes a new weighting function to improve the correlation process in the initial stage of time of arrival difference systems. To evaluate the performance of the proposed function, different weighting functions used in the frequency domain are applied to known generalized cross-correlation methods in the literature, and a simulation of time delay estimation is performed. The results obtained from the simulations show that the proposed method achieves higher accuracy in time delay estimation at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs).
