Abstract
Foreign language learning (FLL) is an important issue all over the world due to international communication increasing day by day very quickly. Despite innovations and improvements in the approaches, methods, materials and techniques, FLL has particular problems, the most important of which is mother tongue-interference or influence. In other words, mother tongue influence is an inevitable fact in a FLL process because we unconsciously transfer sounds, collocations, word order characteristics of our mother tongue into our activities in foreign language. In this study, we will analyse, the positive transfer of reading and writing skills from L1 into L2 realized by 1st year students in the Department of English Language and Literature in Kocaeli University-Turkey, which is a field where such skills are needed much more extensively than any other.
Key words: transfer; L1 competence; L2; linguistic skills, strategies and attitudes; language teaching.
