This paper presents design, analysis, comparison, and experimental verification of a 10-pole spoke type interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous motor with practical and non-practical segmented rotor structures. An ideal non-practical spoke type rotor is used a reference motor and two different practical rotor segment alternatives are investigated. The benefits and comparison of both IPM motors are presented. A prototype motor has been built to test the performance and validate the finite element analysis (FEA) results.
