Current Trends in EEG-Based Emotion Recognition: Insights From a Tertiary Systematic Literature Review

This study is a tertiary systematic literature review that aims to examine secondary studies conducted in the field of EEG-based emotion recognition. A methodology consisting of planning, investigation, and reporting phases was followed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Studies published between 2015 and 2025 were searched across digital libraries such as ACM, IEEE Xplore, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science. The quality of the studies was evaluated based on standard criteria, and the data were analyzed using a structured review form. The findings are based on the analysis of 31 secondary studies. Although the search covered a ten-year period, the identified studies were published between 2017 and 2025. The results show that there has been a notable increase in such studies in the last five years. In addition, most studies focus on multimodal approaches and classification methods, especially deep learning-based models. However, the earlier stages of the signal processing pipeline, such as data acquisition and preprocessing, receive less attention. Methodologically, while the use of reporting standards like PRISMA is increasing, there are still gaps in quality assessment and the use of meta-analysis. This review identifies the current state of EEG-based emotion recognition by clarifying dominant trends and revealing limitations. The findings suggest that future research should focus on more holistic approaches and implement more rigorous, standardized review processes. Consequently, this study provides a comprehensive overview and a roadmap to inform future investigations in this field.
