When we look at the medieval Turkish poetry, we see that the poets and authors were generally
men. Just like they remained in the background in social duties, the women were not active in the
field of poetry and art as well. This was the case both in the Ottoman territories and in Azerbaijan.
Being generally applicable for the whole world in verbal arts, this situation started to change by
the beginning of the 19th century. In this context, Hurshudbanu Natevan and Nigar Hanım in
Azerbaijani and Ottoman poetry are distinguished poetesses who have been the voices of women
in verbal arts. Being the daughter of Karabakh Khan Mehdigulu Khan, Hursudbanu Natevan was
born in Shusha. Natevan's ghazals, which developed and contributed greatly to the Karabakh
poetry, are reflective of the color of sorrow in Azerbaijani poetry. The pains and troubles that she
personally experienced in her childhood, the sadness of losing her relatives and the loss of her 16-
year-old son are reflected in Natevan's poems. Being married twice, especially the adversary
experiences in her first marriage and social pressures are the very sources of the tunes of grief in
her poetry. Natevan, who had a unique place in the Karabakh literary circles of the 19th century
made special contributions to the support of literary assemblies, as well as to the reconstruction of
the city of Karabakh and especially the city of Shusha. The use of redifs ( TRNS; A literary device
in Turkish poetry which means the use of the same word in Turkish poetry more than once to
create rhyme at the end of the lines) such as "Weeps", "Alas!", "I cry", "I die", “Without You” can
be perceived as a reflection of a woman's personal and social tragedies in her poetry. Born in
Istanbul, Nigar Hanım was one of the poets who, like Hurshudbanu Natevan, was exposed to
pressures in the society of the 19th century. She experienced the first pressure in her education life
as her father took her from the French school and had her educated at home when she reached the
age of covering. Married twice, Nigar Hanım's marriage life was also unsuccessful. Over time, the
death of family members and relatives also darkened the colors of Nigar Hanım's grief. She
reflected personal and social problems in her books such as Efsûs –Alas! or Woe!*-(Part One)
(1887), Efsûs (Part Two) (1890), Nîrân- Lights*- (1896), Aks-i Sadâ – Echoes of Sound*-(1899)
and Elhân-ı Vatan – Tunes of the Homeland*-(1916); in the last of which she tried to voice her
concerns over her country. Although Hurshudbanu Natevan and Nigar Hanım wrote works in the
tradition of old Turkish poetry, they broke new ground as poetesses of their societies, expressing
sometimes their personal feelings and sorrows, and sometimes talking about social problems in
their poetry. We see the second feature mostly in Nigar Hanım's poems. With their poems on
motherhood, death and love of country, they have recorded their names in the history of literature
with deep lines. The text hereunder will be a comparison and analysis of the poems of
Hurshudbanu Natevan and Nigar Hanım, the two representatives of the earliest female poets of the
Turkish literature.
