Abstract

The 1999 Kocaeli earthquake of Mw 7.4 took place in the western part of Turkey on August 17th,
1999.Adapazari City located near the seismic fault, was suffered severe damage in living people and many buildings.
Liquefaction was found in many places in the area. We made a field survey to estimate the strong motion characteristics
during the earthquake. by means of observed main-shock at one station, aftershock motions at several stations including
the damaged area, and mobile microtremor measurements. Some correlation was recognized between the damage distribution
and the characteristics of estimated ground motion.
