In this study, tsunami initial
heights were simulated for the eastern part of Marmara sea from two scenario
earthquakes according to the regional tectonics. The epicentral distribution of
earthquakes and regional tectonic were used in order to determine the fault
parameters. The best fitting length and width of the fault of first earthquake
located around Yalova city are 70 km and 15 km which are compatible with the
possible magnitude (Mw:7.2) of the scenario earthquake. The strike of fault
77°, dip angle 65° and slip angle 210° was chosen for a strike slip fault with
a normal fault component. The best fitting length and width of the fault of
second earthquake located around south of Prince Islands are 40 km and 15 km
which are compatible with the possible magnitude (Mw:7.2) of the scenario
earthquake. The strike of fault 117°, dip angle 65° and slip angle 210° was
chosen for a strike slip fault with a normal fault component. The calculated
average slips are 1.7 m and 3.0 m respectively. Initial wave height was
calculated by using static elastic displacement theory, assuming that the fault
segment is identical with the vertical deformation of the sea floor. Among the modeled earthquakes, the first earthquake parameters give a wave
formation in the form of 10 cm uplift and 36 cm subsidence, while the second
earthquake give 7 cm uplift and 30 cm subsidence. Both modeled initial wave
heights generate tsunamis with a high probability of causing destruction on
coastal areas. Finaly, the strike of the fault has no effect on the initial
wave height but, affects the propagation direction of the wave. It has been concluded
from the model results that the waves reaching the shore in the near area are
higher as the slope decreases especially in normal faulting types.
