Abstract

Airports stand out as major energy consumers due to their lighting, radio navigation systems, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, information and communication technologies, and the extensive facilities that the terminal building hosts for passenger and cargo transportation. Green infrastructure and smart energy system projects, which constitute a growing global trend in the air transportation sector, are important for airports for this purpose. Concerns about the environmental impacts of airports are directing engineers, architects and all operational stakeholders to design green airports. The increasing awareness of green infrastructure is pushing different international governments, institutions and sector organizations to work on smart energy. In this chapter, the issue of green infrastructure practices at airports will be evaluated. In this chapter, which aims to contribute to the existing literature, green examples from airports listed in AirportGurus’ Top 10 Most Sustainable Airports in the World will be examined.
