A fast, low-bit-depth representation-based block motion estimation (ME) approach is presented. It basically utilizes truncated gray-coded bit planes for matching and introduces an efficient adaptive search range and early termination approaches to speed up ME processes. All the additional operations used decide adaptive search range, and early termination is computationally lightweight. Experimental results show that the proposed approach provides similar quality in terms of objective assessment by significantly reducing computational load compared to full-search based ME.
