Abstract

Thin-film, multilayered TiALN/TiN (titanium aluminum nitride/ titanium nitride) composites were investigated as a possible alternative for the protective coating of plunger materials used in the glass forming industry. In this paper, an investigation on the resistance against electrochemical aqueous corrosion of the new materials is presented. Corrosion tests with alternating current and direct current electrochemical methods in 0.5 M sodium chloride (NaCl) aqueous solution at ambient temperature reveal that multilayered coatings of this kind effectively increase the corrosion resistance compared to the uncoated substrate.
