Özet

The concept of metadiscourse, which defines the features of language, not only defines how thoughts are expressed, but also defines the relations established with the receivers. Authors need to organize the discourse, include the readers in the text and convey their own thoughts to the reader in order to establish a relationship with their readers. In this context, linguistic resources used by the author to show his stance against the text and the reader concretely are called metadiscourse. Metadiscourse helps to determine the stance of the author by assuming different linguistic functions through interactive and interactional dimensions of metadiscourse determinants. The aim of this study is to examine how the linguistic realizations of the evidentials function as metadiscourse tools and how they play a role in persuading the receiver. The study was structured with qualitative research method and document scanning model was used. The sample of the study, determined by the proportional sample size calculation formula, consists of 78 research articles. In the study, the functions of the evidentials, which are the information-oriented interactive metadiscourse markers in Hyland's (2005) metadiscourse model, in Turkish were discussed from a metadiscursive point of view. As a result of the study, the functions of the evidentials used in Turkish social sciences were determined, the specificity of these functions and their generalizability in terms of social sciences were discussed. Among the fields of History, Sociology, Psychology and Philosophy, it has been concluded that the most frequent use of evidential is in history, and the least frequent one belongs to the field of philosophy.
