Environmental pollution occurs as a result of the disposal of advance
manufactured goods in waste forms (solid, liquid, gas). Environmental
technologies are the methods and materials used to minimize the environmental
impacts of the pollution and converting them to non-pollutants. It is essential
that these technologies should not cause another contamination. It is a sustainable
and clean technology, and an innovative approach to use microalgae in
environmental technologies. Microalgae are the tiniest photosynthetic microorganisms
having simple sell structure and their intended purposes have been
being researched for the last 75 years. Alongside of the environmental biotechnology
applications such as bioremediation of wastewaters, carbon dioxide
capture, conversion of the algal biomass into biofuel, bio-jet fuel, biofertilizer,
animal feed production; microalgal biomass has fields of use in medicine, food,
pharmaceuticals, textile and cosmetics industries. Feeding them with wastewaters
provides economical treatment bringing equal or better treating than the
conventional treatment methods. The algal wastewater treatment ponds, which
can genarate economical benefits by producing microalgae cultures concurrently,
have become a substantial option. The green buildings reusing wastewaters
treated with microalgae and illuminated or heated with the microalgal energy
will be built in the future. To prevent pollution and maintain the sustainability
while preserving the balance of the environment, it is a necessity to go beyond
the ordinary technologies in every field and transform to green technologies.
