Metaphors of national and non-national taekwondo players about the concept of the pandemic

Özet

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of national and non-Taekwondo players about the concept of “pandemic” through metaphor.

Method: The research was carried out according to the qualitative screening method and the data were applied online via an e-questionnaire prepared via Google forms after ethical approval was obtained during the peak of the pandemic in 2021. For this purpose, an information announcement has been made about the research including the survey link through the federation. When the questionnaires were filled out by 172 athletes in accordance with the principle of volunteering by active Taekwondo athletes participating in competitions representing their clubs located in Turkey were examined, a total of 164 questionnaire forms filled out in accordance with the directive were included in the study. The metaphors developed by the athletes included in the study regarding the concept of the pandemic were evaluated according to whether they were national or not. The descriptive analysis method was used to analyze the data and to make a grouping. The data obtained were digitized and analyzed in the SPSS statistics 25.0 package program. Descriptive statistics are included in the analysis of the data. The data were interpreted according to the frequency and percentage values. Results: When the metaphors developed by Taekwondo players were examined, it was seen that they explained the pandemic concept by relating it more through metaphors in the categories of “punishment”, “uncertainty-helplessness”, and “negative depressive feeling” and finally “fear”.

Findings: While national taekwondo players associated the concept of the pandemic with the metaphors of maximum punishment, uncertainty, and helplessness, depressive feelings, respectively; non-nationals explained it with the metaphor of maximum punishment, depressive feeling, uncertainty, and helplessness, respectively.
