Kocaeli province as a city-region is comprised of the Kocaeli Greater Municipality and related district municipal authorities. The urban setting of the city-region demonstrates an interesting cityscape with lzmit Bay in the inner skirts, the Marmara Sea at the western edge of the region and the Black Sea defining the morphology of northern coastal areas. This setting is significant with mass transit routes connecting Istanbul to inner regions of the Anatolian Peninsula. The unique morphology generates interesting questions on "how the urban landscape has been and will be shaped" and "what needs to be done in terms of guiding urban development to not only foster smart growth but also create a livable and vibrant urban setting". So, urban plans at all scales do not only refer to frameworks for future development, but also are comprised of guidelines and principles for building typology and spatial syntax.
