Abstract

Moulds used in the production of glass containers consist of several components and have a complicated structure with respect to the material selection and construction due to the different properties which determine the performance. The plunger, used in bottle production with a WC-Ni/Co type cemented carbide coating, is chosen for an cathodic ion arc-PVD application. TiAlN/TiN multilayer is introduced as the new type of coating. The wear process of the conventional coating as well as of the TiAlN/TiN multilayer coating is studied respectively under real glass forming conditions. The wear behaviour of both coatings is documented by electronmicroscopic methods as well as Auger spectroscopy at various life times.
