Abstract

The incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is 2%-3% among all adult cancers. Currently, patients are diagnosed at earlier stages and more commonly and they longer life expectancy with the emerging technologies. Several prognostic models have been developed for followup after treatment for RCC. In the light of studies demonstrating RCC nuclear grading systems has a direct relationship with survival, nuclear grading system is included in prognostic models. Although different nuclear grading systems have been proposed, Fuhrman nuclear grading system is still the most common. Some important decisions have been made on nuclear grading systems in consensus meetings held in 1997 and 2012. In this study, we aim to review RCC grading systems, clinical use of Fuhrman nuclear grading system, and several variations with current literature.
