Population growth and rapid development of technology have increased the production
capacity of the textile industry, as in many other industries. Textile industries are one of the
important sectors because they meet the need for clothing that comes after people's food
needs. Today, the use of synthetic dyes and dye production is quite high. The obtained
dyestuffs are used in many fields such as the paint industry, leather, paper, acrylic, cosmetics,
plastic and food industry, as well as the textile industries. Large amounts of water are
consumed during production in the textile industries. A significant part of the dye used during
the dyeing processes passes into the waste water. The dyestuffs in the waste water formed
after the production process are resistant to biodegradation, resistant to light, heat and
oxidizing agents, and are highly toxic. When wastewater containing dyestuffs are discharged
into natural water structures, the light transmittance in the receiving environment decreases
and negatively affects photosynthesis reactions. In addition, dyestuffs, heavy metals, inorganic salts, surfactants, organic pollutants, oil and
grease in the content of textile wastewater cause serious problems on human health due to
their carcinogenic and mutagenic nature. For this reason, such dyed wastewater must be
treated before being discharged into the environment, and dyestuffs must be removed from
the wastewater. Physical, chemical and biological color removal technologies such as
adsorption, membrane separation, coagulation, flocculation, electrochemical oxidation, ion
exchange, photocatalytic degradation, aerobic and anaerobic biological treatment processes
are used to remove dyestuffs from wastewater. In this study, the treatment methods used in
the color removal of textile industry waste water in the literature are emphasized.
