Özet
The humanitarian crisis in Ireland, the first signs of which appeared towards the end of 1845 and which was precipitated by the rapidly spreading potato famine, is one of the greatest disasters of the nineteenth century. Due to the devastating effects on agricultural production caused by the Phytophthora infestans fungus, which infected potato crops, the famine caused the Irish people to face the threat of mass extinction and had sociopolitical, cultural and economic consequences that would profoundly affect the common destiny of the island's inhabitants. It is evident that accounts of the aid sent by Sultan Abd & uuml;lmecit I to the people of the region, who were struggling with the famine disaster during this period, fail to distinguish between historical reality and claims of an anecdotal nature. This problematic attitude, which is also reflected in the academic literature, makes it impossible to accurately identify objectively based historical information. In this study, the accuracy of claims about the aid that Sultan Abd & uuml;lmecit ordered to be sent to the Irish people in the spring of 1847, when the famine was at its worst, will be discussed, and the relevant historical background will be elucidated with reference to archival records and primary sources.
