Özet

The aim of this study was to investigate problem solving and problem posing skills of middle school students. The study was designed as a case study. A convenient sampling that is one of the purposeful sampling methods was chosen for determining a study group. According to this, the study was conducted with 88 middle school students. ″A Form of Problem Solving and Posing (5, 6, 7, 8)″ was used as a data collection instrument. The obtained data was evaluated by using a rubric. The stages of this rubric were determined as themes. The data was analyzed, organized, and presented according to these themes. As a result, it was found that even though 6th, 7th, and 8thgraders could understand the problems, 5thgraders couldn’t understand them. It was obtained that a result that the students were insufficient and couldn’t identify the strategy for solution at the stage of organizing plan. It was found that, though the students reached appropriate and true solutions, the students who were studying at all grades faced with problems at the stage of applying plan. Some of the 8thgraders could evaluate the problems. But, the students who at all grades couldn’t evaluate the problems. Finally, it was gained that when posing a problem, middle school students made logical mistakes so that these problems couldn’t be solved.
