In power distribution, medium voltage cables are preferred for both reducing the
probability of failure and for safety reasons. However, it becomes necessary to install
many cable systems in parallel in the same gallery, especially in regions which the energy
demand increase. In this study, a case study in which the power cables installed from the
main step-down output of a transformer substation to the distribution center are
connected via the coupling bus is examined. In this context, first of all, the cable system
was modeled and analyzed, and the model was verified with the field measurement data.
Then, depending on the various parameters, the currents passing through the coupling
busbar and the variation of the current distributions on the cables were examined. The
results show that all these parameters have significant effects on the currents in the
cables and the coupling. This proves the necessity of considering the changes in the
operating conditions that may be encountered during the installation of the cable
systems in order to ensure the continuity of the energy supply and the system reliability
in the cable systems with parallel circuits.
