© 2023 Elsevier LtdEnergy transition is necessary in order to reduce the utilization of fossil based energy sources and to secure the necessary reduction of hazardous impact to the environment. The implementation of energy transition in specific economies is a complex task as it affects economic, political, social and finally technological aspects. Digitalization in recent years enabled the targeted use of different smart technological solutions that can help in reaching key energy transition goals faster. No matter that digitalization is undoubtedly bringing useful benefits to different engineering applications, the development must be tracked and evaluated from a resource utilization and environmental point of the view. This introductory editorial elaborates the latest research works presented at the 6th International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Technologies held in Split and Bol, Croatia, in 2021 (SpliTech 2021). The key conference tracks are focused on Smart City, Energy and Environment, Engineering Modelling, e-Health and Decarbonisation of built environment. The presented research outcomes at SpliTech 2021 helped to understand the latest progress in the development of smart technological solutions with the consideration of energy transition aspects.
