Özet

The spread of Internet and advance in technology have had an impact on most aspects of life. Virtual, online or mobile games have been among the most influential ones as it is possible to observe a number of people who are keen on those games no matter their age or gender are. In this respect, there are a considerable number of studies in literature about the impact of video games on vocabulary acquisition. The main advantage of video games is that they are quite motivational to learners and rich in terms of linguistic resources. They include visual and aural input which is not only appeals to learners’ visual but also audial channel as well, and this reinforces the impact of the learning process. Moreover, they can be conducive to vocabulary acquisition because games present various vocabulary items in meaningful contexts. Most studies have found out that video games foster vocabulary acquisition. At this point, as well as the number of vocabulary items acquired through video games, the quality of them is also important. Due to the fact that there is a wide range of video games available to players, the quality of vocabulary items acquired through those games can be various. Different contexts in games may provide learners with different kinds of vocabulary items such as academic, idiomatic, slang, theme-based, swear words and daily vocabulary. While it is possible to find lots of studies regarding this issue in global context, the number of studies conducted in this field in Turkey is limited. Therefore, the correlation
between the different types of video games and the quality of vocabulary items acquired through those games have been examined in detail within the framework of this study. The results have shown that the correlation between playing video games and vocabulary acquisition is worth mentioning.
