Medium voltage (MV) power system has great importance to provide electrical energy to the consumers safely and continuously. Various types of faults in power systems components cause shortages and costly losses. Predictive maintenance studies are increasingly preferred in power systems because it provides to detect the fault symptoms and to take action before a malfunction occur. In this study, measurement methods of partial discharge (PD) activities, which are one of the root causes of faults in medium voltage power systems, are summarized. First, the development processes of partial discharge events is expressed. Then, partial discharge measurement methods are explained with application examples for power system components and their importance in maintenance management processes is emphasized. Obtained results show that, by means of partial discharge monitoring in preventive maintenance studies, it is possible to detect possible faults and prevent costly outages in power system.
